Nungu Sewing Project

Nungu Sewing group runs the Nungu pre-school and the Nungu sewing. Started in 1988 by Maggie Mills from Skukuza in the Kruger National Park, women in the community started doing tailoring work to make clothes and duvets both for themselves and for the community. They added bead work, dresses, children’s wear, table runners, bags, scuffs, pencil cases, dolls, Christmas trees.. The goods produced were sold at the Johannesburg market, Nelspruit mall, White river craft market, Hazyview Reservoir, and the Kruger National Park. When Maggie left, the sewing project went bankrupt.
It was revived by Maggie Mills and Peter Mabila in 2008.
In a local building, the project is shared by the pre-school and the sewing group. In the mornings, the children are taken care off. Then in the afternoons, after the children have left ,the sewing commences. The whole concept is to build a multipurpose centre for the women in the community.
The current sewing group is comprised of six women and 6 recently donated new machines.. They now need more materials for samples and to complete orders.
